K-2nd Team Update (Spring 2025)!
April 5, 2025
Hi WSA family!
Our first Saturday of the Spring season is here! Please take a few minutes to read these important notes and updates:
The weather is spotty today - cool, cloudy and chance of some precipitation.
Fields are currently open, so all scheduled games are on, dress warm/appropriately
Should conditions deteriorate to point that it’s no longer fun or safe for players to be out on the fields, vol coaches can always use their best judgement to decide if worth proceeding or calling off the game
K & 1st Grade Boys and Girls:
Games are at Allen’s Meadows, field 4 - double check your player’s roster and schedule in TeamSnap to make sure you can find your team and coach in the morning
Be very careful and alert in the parking lot, both driving and walking, we expect it to be very busy - please keep an eye on the children!
New WSA jerseys for those who requested via their registration will be available for pickup at the fields before games - jerseys are same as Fall 2024 season
“Home” team in the TeamSnap schedule wears BLUE side of your jersey; “away” wear the GRAY/WHITE side
Games are 3v3 (K) or 3v3 or 4v4 (1st), NO goalies - idea is for every player to touch the ball as much as possible
Teams should occupy interior sidelines of the fields
Spectators should observe from the outer perimeter of fields
Please cheer for players and teams positively and resist the shouting of instructions such as “kick it!” or “pass it!”
Coaches should encourage and celebrate players touching and dribbling the ball as much as possible in effort to have them gain confidence with the ball at their feet
Vol coaches should let the children play freely, avoiding persistent instructions as much as they can - we want kids to play without stress or fear of any kind that can come with trying to process these in-game instructions
Vol coaches (one from each team) should be on the field of play and work together to keep one ball in play at all times - no out of bounds, no throw-ins, no kick-ins… coaches simply roll a new ball in play when it goes out of the field of play
Scores are not important or kept, coaches should work together to achieve a balanced game with each team scoring their share of goals - fun by all is the objective!
If a game is imbalanced from a scoring perspective, coaches may manage the game by subbing players in/out, swapping players potentially and rolling the ball in directions to support one team or the other
After K Girls games (last game of day), vol coaches and parents of teams are to move goals off the field to side by Community gardens
2nd Grade Boys and Girls:
BOYS games are at Lilly North Field (grass field adjacent to Lilly turf)
GIRLS games are Hurlbutt fields at Ambler Farm (Girls games are comprised of 2-4th graders)
Double check your player’s roster and schedule in TeamSnap
New WSA jerseys for those who requested via their registration will be available for pickup at the fields - jerseys are same as Fall 2024 season
“Home” team in TeamSnap schedule wears BLUE side of your jersey; “away” wear the GRAY/WHITE side
Games are 5v5 (or 6v6) plus a goalie depending on coach discretion and players available at the field - 5x5 preferable to allow more space to play
Goalies: all players should expect to play goalie throughout the season. We recommend coaches rotate each of their players into goalkeeper position for one half at a time. Please encourage and celebrate the bravery it takes to try this new position.
Coaches and teams should occupy interior sidelines of the fields
Coaches of 2nd grade games are NOT permitted on the field of play
Spectators should observe from the outer perimeter of fields
Spectators should cheer for players positively and resist the shouting of instructions to players, let coaches coach
Be kind to Junior Referees - they are the 11-12 year old children of your friends and neighbors in town and they are learning!
Zero tolerance for any engagement, dissent, criticism or interactions with the Junior Referees - if it’s reported to WSA, you will not be permitted to coach or observe games for the remainder of season
It is the duty of the coaches to ensure safe play by managing their players - no slide tackling by players (at all, especially from behind), no shoving or pushing and no tripping - should any of these behaviors occur (whether called by Junior Referees or not), the player committing these fouls should be subbed out by their coach and informed to avoid those actions for remainder; use these times to teach safe play - this doesn’t mean coaches should be calling the game or calling out the Junior Referees for making or not making calls, it just means to be observant of rough play and work to mitigate it by teaching
Familiarize yourself and your player with the rules of 2nd grade games you clicking HERE
Players should observe the build out line, this is the line between the goal and half field… on all goal kicks, and after a goalie saves the ball, the defending team should drop back behind the buildout line until the ball is put into play - the goal is to alleviate pressure on these restarts to allow teams to get the ball back in play, by playing from the back
The games are for learning and fun, not for focusing on winning or losing - uphold sportsmanship at all times
No scores, records or season standings are kept and no playoffs are held at end of season. Games are for fun and learning.
Coaches should work together to ensure a balanced game - rotating players among positions and in/out of game as needed - if a player has scored too many goals, put them on defense for a while or give another a chance to try offense, as one example
Coaches must work to avoid imbalanced scoring and over emphasis on “winning” - do not, run up the score - reports of doing so will result in loss of coaching privilege
2nd Boys (Lilly North field) vol coaches and parents must move the 4 goals, sandbags off the field to the front right corner (near trail/parking lot) after their games to make way for other sports that follow, thank you!
